She did not want either of the cats to feel that she loved the other more. If one cat sat in her lap for a while and allowed her to pet it, she would make sure to pet the other cat soon after. When it was time for the cats to be fed, the girl would feed a different cat first each time. If she spoke sweetly to one cat, she would always follow by adoring the other cat too. The girl believed that all of the special measures she took ensured that the cats would not compete for her affections. Both of these cats loved the girl fiercely.
